Eating behaviour in adults

A healthy balanced diet

Women should aim to eat 2000 calories per day and men 2500 calories, and we should not consume more calories than our bodies need for energy, as this will result in weight gain. Regular exercise should supplement a healthy diet for a healthy balanced lifestyle. Adults should aim to drink around 2 litres of water per day, eat five portions of fruit and vegetables per day, and limit daily consumption of saturated fats and sugars (e.g. cream, chocolate, cakes, fried foods). More information about maintaining a healthy diet and balanced lifestyle is available in the resource panel.

It is important to note that calorie requirements can differ depending on a number of biological and environmental factors, including age, height, weight, sex, and level of physical activity or exercise. As a guide, you may wish to use a calorie calculator to provide a more individualised estimate of your recommended calorie consumption (see resource panel). Please note, any significant changes to diet or calorie consumption should only be implemented under the supervision of your healthcare provider.
