Memory skills

We all use strategies to help us remember things in our fast-paced world. These can be really helpful for children or adults with specific memory challenges and include using written lists, checklists, calendars, smartphone reminders and alarms.

  • Increase repetition and rehearsal of information that must be remembered. Songs and rhymes are especially helpful for younger children.
  • Externalise memory – use lists, checklists, calendars, smartphone reminders and alarms. Visual schedules can be used here as well (further discussed in the ‘Executive function skills’ section).
  • Use environmental modifications. All of us benefit from keeping keys in the same place by the door, glasses in the same spot on the nightstand, and so on. Children will remember important school materials and sports equipment when they are found in the same place every time they are needed.
  • Use pillboxes for medication tracking.
